I hated my empty bed the following morning, but consoled myself with the realization that once again, what little sleep I'd gotten had been nightmare-free. Kit's visits often had this effect.
I spent the morning composing the letter I planned to send to the key people I knew were members of the Domino Club. In the letter, I detailed Hector Dalton's more unsavory practices, explained what I expected from them when this information was made public, and included a copy of their picture going up the stairs to the private part of the club. I hoped their desire to protect themselves would keep them from stonewalling prosecution. I thought the letter and the accompanying media coverage would do the trick.
After a quick lunch, I called Senator Silva and promised to send him the same information I planned to send the police. He was one person I knew wouldnât try to hide the evidence or let anyone else do so if he could help it. Next, I made a surprise visit to Dalton's accountant. Initially, he had no intention of listening to me, let alone cooperating. I'd expected that. When I'd finished explaining what was going to happen, he became more helpful. The paperwork he gave me was damning, but if the case came to trial, his testimony would also be needed. I knew he planned to demand immunity in exchange for that testimony, and I could only hope his demand wouldn't be a stumbling block. Since he had never been directly involved with anything other than the money, I thought he would probably get his immunity.
My next meeting was with Candy Camacho. I had a full statement already typed out for her to sign. It was possible that she, too, could get immunity for her testimony, but I hoped she signed my paperwork believing she was doing something right for a change.
Getting Candyâs signature took longer than Iâd expected because she was both scared and still unsure, but eventually she dried her tears and signed my document.
Now I had nearly everything I needed, but I still intended to make a try for Hector's office tonight. Any additional evidence I found could only help, and I personally wanted whatever files he kept on local officials, so when Iâd finished with Candy, I went home to work out the details.
Settled in my favorite easy chair with a pad and pen, I began outlining a detailed plan for my nightâs adventure. I knew surprises would come up, but I intended to be as ready as I could. I was halfway through a workable plan when my previous late night and comfortable chair conspired against me, and I drifted off to sleep. I don't know how long I slept, but I awoke with a violent jerk, feeling disoriented and covered in a cold sweat. My pad and pen were on the floor halfway across the room from the chair. This one nightmare seemed to be trying to make up for the recent times when I'd slept dream-free.
